Rodent Control in Tampa, FL

Scratching in the attic at night? In Tampa Bay, that’s usually roof rats — and the fix isn’t just trapping, it’s sealing them out for good. Here’s how professional rodent control and exclusion work.

Tampa’s two rat species

Roof rats

The Tampa specialty. Slender, agile climbers that nest in attics, soffits, and palm trees. They reach the roof via overhanging branches, power lines, and fences, then slip in through gaps as small as a half-inch — around vents, where the roof meets the wall, through deteriorated soffits, and around AC line penetrations. Fruit trees (especially citrus) and bird feeders are major food sources that draw them to a property.

Norway rats

Heavier burrowing rats more common at ground level — around foundations, under sheds, and near dumpsters or pet food stored outside. They enter through low gaps: under doors, through foundation vents, and around pipes.

The professional rodent process: trap, then exclude

  1. Full inspection. Attic, roofline, soffits, vents, garage, and foundation — mapping droppings, rub marks, gnawing, and every potential entry point. A thorough inspection takes real time; a five-minute look isn’t one.
  2. Trapping out the current population. Snap traps placed along runways in the attic and other activity areas. This phase takes days to a couple of weeks — the population has to be removed before sealing, or you trap animals inside.
  3. Exclusion. Every entry point gets sealed with rodent-proof materials: hardware cloth or sheet metal over vents and gaps, copper mesh plus sealant around pipe penetrations, door sweeps, and repairs to damaged soffits and fascia. Foam alone doesn’t count — rats chew through it.
  4. Habitat reduction. Trimming branches away from the roof, managing fruit drop, securing trash and pet food, and clearing dense ground cover against the house.
  5. Attic remediation (if needed). Heavily soiled insulation may need removal and replacement, plus sanitizing — quoted as a separate job from the exclusion itself.
The #1 rodent-job mistake: sealing entry points before the animals inside are removed. Trapped rats die in walls (odor, flies) or chew new exits — sometimes through drywall into living space. Trap-out first, exclusion second, in that order.

What you can do right now

  • Trim tree limbs back so nothing touches or overhangs the roof.
  • Pick up fallen fruit promptly; don’t leave pet food outside overnight.
  • Keep trash bins lidded and the area around them clean.
  • Walk the perimeter and note gaps at the roofline, vents without screens, and daylight visible around the garage door.
  • Don’t store firewood or clutter against the house — it’s rodent harborage.

Rodent control costs in Tampa

Inspection plus trapping and full exclusion typically runs $300–$800 depending on home size and the number of entry points. Attic insulation removal and replacement, if the attic is heavily contaminated, is priced separately. Get the scope in writing: which entry points get sealed, with what materials, and what the warranty covers if rodents return.

How to vet a rodent control company

  • Verify the FDACS business license and the technician’s credentials.
  • Confirm the plan is trap-out then exclusion — not just one or the other.
  • Ask what materials they seal with (hardware cloth, metal, copper mesh — not foam alone).
  • Ask how they handle poison, if at all — and get the pet/wildlife safety plan in writing.
  • Get the exclusion warranty in writing: how long, and what happens if rodents get back in.

Rodent control FAQs

Why are roof rats so common in Tampa?

Roof rats are excellent climbers that thrive where fruit trees, palms, and dense landscaping give them food and cover — exactly what much of Tampa Bay looks like. They travel along power lines, fences, and tree limbs, then enter homes through gaps at the roofline, soffits, and vents.

What's the difference between trapping and exclusion?

Trapping removes the rodents currently inside. Exclusion seals every entry point so new ones can't get in. Trapping without exclusion is a revolving door — exclusion is what actually solves the problem long-term. A good rodent job includes both.

How do I know if I have rats in the attic?

Common signs: scratching or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings at night (roof rats are nocturnal), droppings in the attic or garage, gnaw marks on wood or wiring, greasy rub marks along beams, and nests made of shredded insulation or paper. A professional inspection confirms it.

Is it safe to use rat poison?

Poison baits carry real downsides: a poisoned rodent can die inside a wall (odor for weeks), and there's secondary-poisoning risk to pets and wildlife that eat poisoned rodents. Many professionals prefer trapping plus exclusion for residential jobs. Discuss the tradeoffs with the company before agreeing to any rodenticide use.

How much does rodent exclusion cost in Tampa?

Full exclusion work — inspection, sealing all entry points, and trapping out the current population — typically runs $300–$800 depending on home size and how many entry points need sealing. Attic cleanup and re-insulation, if needed, is a separate job. These are 2026 planning estimates, not quotes.
